Xenon headlights have a ballast to ignite the high voltage xenon lights when they turn on that can remain energized even if the lights are turned off. Be sure to disconnect the headlight assembly or battery before attempting to replace it. If your A6 Quattro has a HID headlight burnt out, it could be a burnt out bulb or failed headlight ballast.
Twist the ring and make sure that the locking tab is completely out of the slot. With the connector off, you’ll be presented with the back end of your D2S HID bulb. The bulb itself is held in place by another lock ring. To remove it, all you need to do is turn it counterclockwise.
Step 1 – Remove the stock halogen bulb. Open the hood of your car and disconnect the negative (black) terminal on your car battery. Now find the back of the headlight. You'll see a cover held on by a clip. Push in the clip and remove the cover. Reach into the headlight and remove the clip on the back of the halogen bulb.

Figure 8 Flip the headlight over to service the control modules. To remove the Xenon headlight module, remove the three T18 Torx fasteners (red arrows). Lift the Xenon module up to remove (inset). When removing the Xenon module, inspect the module for corrosion. If needed, replace the module as well as the headlight.
