When we first meet a tomb guardian the tutorial tells us to use force push when the guardian does one of its special abilities. This pushes its heart out and let’s us do critical damage. I did this with no trouble at all at that point of the game. Now I’m in the second tomb it just does not appear to work.

This skill is closely connected with the Force Push power. By unlocking this upgrade, you can either push multiple enemies away at once or throw heavier enemies off balance. This will make it easier for you to fight your opponents, as the weaker units can be pushed right into the abyss. It'll speed up the game a lot.
